John Louis Swinney

John Louis Swinney passed away peacefully on January 6, 2018 at his Deer Park home, at the age of 94.
John L. was born on October 9, 1923 in Vinton, Louisiana to his parents, Marion “Bill” Mott Swinney and Bessie Eudora McClenden . John L. married Billie Jean Grauke in 1947. The Swinney’s moved from Vinton, Louisiana to Houston, Texas where they had their only child, Kathy Jean Swinney Earley. They had two granddaughters, Lori J. and Angela Marie Earley, and two great-granddaughters, Aislinn Marie and Ellis Arwynn-James.
John L., the second oldest of seven children, was a Marine and World War II veteran. He was a diligent, intelligent, and dignified man with a gentle, gracious nature and a good sense of humor. He worked for the Shell Oil Refinery as an inspector for 36 years. Upon retirement, he enjoyed drinking his cup of coffee with his wife and reading the newspaper, enjoyed Astros Baseball, watching CNBC and working around the house. He delighted going to his farm in the country where he raised cattle and horses.
John L. is survived by his sister, Betty Parker and his brother, Raymond Swinney. He is preceded in death by his wife, Billie Jean, his older sister, Joyce Dillon, and his younger siblings, Dora Magee, JoAnn Powers, and Bill Swinney.
His funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 13, 2018 in the Welsh Memorial United Methodist Church in Vinton, Louisiana. Pastor Rick Watson will officiate. Visitation will be on Friday, January 12, 2018 in the church from 6-8 p.m. and continue at 1 p.m. until service on Saturday. Burial will be in the Antioch – Big Woods Cemetery in Edgerly, Louisiana.
