Betty was born October 26, 1937, in Norfolk, the middle of four children. As the “middle” child, she strived to be perfect. The stories she told of her childhood always related to Ocean View or dancing. Her destiny in life was made complete when she met Ron at a USO dance. The rest they say is history.
She spent the early years of her marriage following Ron’s duty stations in the Navy. They lived in Scotland, California, Maryland and finally settled back in Norfolk, Virginia. Betty was an excellent bookkeeper and worked for 10 years at Universal Products, a wholesale distributor. When the children came along, Betty made being a housewife and mother her priority.
Several things her children learned from her:
1. Thriftiness.
2. Work Hard.
3. Devotion.
Betty was an avid crafter. Making quilts, ceramics and decorating were a passion. She is most noted for her personalized quilts for each of her children. Betty also, was great at Halloween costumes for her children. Not store bought, but items from around the house became elaborate spacemen costumes or Angels. Her children won a few Halloween contests due to her creations.
The love of her life, Ron, was her best friend, dance partner and husband of over 61 years. You rarely saw one without the other. She found him to be the most handsome man she had ever met. Their devotion to each other knew no bounds. They truly enjoyed many years of dancing with the Shag Club and made lifelong friends along the way. Ron and Betty knew how to dance! If the right song was playing, they were dancing and boy did they know how to “cut the rug”.
Betty was pre-deceased by her husband Ron. She is survived by her three children Barbara (Steve), Ronald (Denise), and David (Rhonda), ten grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. She will be missed by all.
Funeral is January 28, 2022, 3pm at Albert G. Horton Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milner Road Suffolk, VA 23434. Donations may be made in memory of Ron and Betty Flatley c/o USO of Hampton Roads www.uso.org.
