Dr. Betty Gibbs Holmes

Virginia Beach - Dr. Betty Gibbs Holmes was graciously accepted into God's Kingdom on May 2, 2016. She was born in Amelia County, VA to the late William D. and Vivien Young Barr on April 29, 1934. She was preceded in death by husband, O. Louis Holmes.

She is survived by her only child, William C. Gibbs Jr.; brother, WIlliam D. Barr and his wife Bonnie from Flager Beach, FL; two grandchildren, William R. Gibbs and Adam L. Gibbs; two nieces and one nephew.

Dr. Holmes earned her BS degree from Longwood College, her Master's degree from Old Dominion University and her Doctorate of Education from Virginia Tech. She was a lifelong educator working in the Virginia Beach Public School system for over 40 years. She taught at Alanton Elementary, Lynnhaven Middle School, and First Colonial and Cox High Schools.

Betty will be remembered most for her hard work and tireless effort, sometimes working three jobs while attending school to pay for her beloved home on Broad Bay.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8p.m. on Wed. May 4, 2016 at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Rd, Va Beach. A celebration of life will be held at 1p.m. on Thurs. May 5, 2016 at Wycliffe Presbyterian Church, 1445 N. Great Neck Rd, Va Beach. Entombment will follow at Princess Anne Memorial Park.
