It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Brian He'enalu Kaneta, a loving husband, devoted father, cherished grandfather, and a stalwart member of his community. He left this world peacefully on July 26, 2025, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at the age of 71.
Born on October 2, 1953, in Oakland, California, Brian was the firstborn son of Elmer “Al” Raymond Kaneta and Geraldine Anna Kaneta. He grew up surrounded by love and support, which shaped him into the passionate, generous, and humble man he became. He was preceded in death by parents and his beloved brother, Kevin, whose memory remained a cornerstone of Brian’s strength and resolve.
Brian's journey began in Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii, where he graduated from Kailua High School. His love for his country led him to serve in the United States Navy for 24 years, where he achieved the distinguished rank of Senior Chief Storekeeper. His commitment to service and duty exemplified the values he held dear and inspired those around him.
On February 28, 1976, Brian married the love of his life, Elena, in a beautiful ceremony in Kailua, Hawaii. Together, they forged a life filled with laughter, adventure, and unwavering support for one another. Brian was a dedicated family man, leaving behind his wife, Elena, and their children: Amanda, Scott, their spouses, Brian and Sarah, their grandchildren: Jesse, Elli, and Connor, and his brother, Rob and his wife Julie. He was also blessed with cherished relationships with his "children in love," Todd and Jen.
Brian's professional journey extended beyond his military service. He worked as a civilian contractor for AMS, served as a contractor Navy Instructor at Tidewater Community College, and contributed his expertise as a logistician with Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics. His dedication to education and mentorship was a testament to his belief in the power of knowledge and personal growth.
An active member of various organizations, Brian found joy in his involvement with the VFW, Boy Scouts of America, 4-H, and the Norfolk Beekeepers Association. A diligent beekeeper, he reveled in the beauty of nature, caring for his bees with the same love and attention he devoted to his family. As an aspiring writer and passionate gamer, Brian found creative outlets that allowed him to express his vibrant spirit and connect with others.
Throughout his life, Brian was known for his steadfast nature and simple needs. He lived joyfully, embracing every moment with gratitude and grace. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his passion for life will inspire generations to come.
In his final days, the family expresses heartfelt gratitude for the loving and compassionate care Brian received from his doctors—Dr. Gary Simons, Dr. Scott Cross, and Dr. Gauri Radkar—and the dedicated staff at Virginia Oncology Associates. We extend a special shout-out to the nurses, care partners, mobility team, and staff at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital’s Oncology Unit, the unsung heroes of his day-to-day care. Your kindness and support made a significant difference in his life, and we are forever in your debt.
Rest in peace, Brian. Your unwavering love, laughter, and kindness will forever echo in our lives.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 14 at the Smith and Williams Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00 p.m., 4889 Princess Anne Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23462.
