

Carl A. Barbato, 82, passed away at home with his loving family by his side on August 2, 2013. He was born on May 16, 1931 to the late Carl F. and Yole V. Barbato in Newark, New Jersey. He grew up in the Brookdale section of Bloomfield, NJ. Mr. Barbato studied Accounting at Upsala College, but ultimately followed his passion for construction, operating his own company until his retirement. He married the former Frances Liscio, and they raised their family, first in Parsippany and East Hanover, NJ, before settling in Virginia Beach. A sailor all his life, he was a long-time member of the Lake Parsippany Yacht Club, before learning the joy of sailing on the Chesapeake. A builder at heart, he built his NJ homes, sailboats, and models. While in NJ, he was active in the Cub Scouts, serving as Pack Leader for Pack 128. His many joys included car shows, oil painting, reading, and camping.
He is predeceased by his parents, and by his sister, Bernice Sempier. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Frances L. Barbato of Virginia Beach; five children, Martin F. Barbato of Madison, NJ; Edward C. Barbato of Grandview, Tennessee; Robert A. Barbato (and wife Corinne); Kathleen A. Sweeney (and husband Jeff); Nancy R. Keech (and husband Rob), all of Virginia Beach; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grand-children; and his two sisters-at-heart, cousin JoAnn Russoniello and sister-in-law Pauline Verone. A visitation will be held on Monday, August 5, 2013 from 6-8pm at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23462. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at 3pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Colonial Grove Memorial Park.
