

Charles Atkinson Hayes passed away peacefully on December 17, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born on June 11, 1939, in Warrenton, North Carolina, and was raised in Princess Anne County, Virginia.
Charles was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and family man. Known for his kind heart, honesty, and loyalty. Friends and family fondly remember his quick wit and one-liners that always brought smiles and laughter.
A lifelong outdoorsman, Charles found great joy in hunting and took immense pride in serving as President of the Southern Classic Open Fox Hunters Association for many years. He dedicated over 30 years of service to the City of Virginia Beach, where he was respected for his strong work ethic and commitment.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Brenda Hayes; his daughter, Susan Heafner (David); and his son, Charles Bradley Hayes (Stacy). He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, David Heafner Jr., Kelsey Newton (Kenny), Dylan Hayes (Abby), Brooke Hayes, and Colby Hayes; and his beloved great-grandchildren, Weston Newton, Brock Newton, and David Heafner III. He is also survived by his brother, Jerry Hayes (Evelyn), as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to their devoted caregiver, Pat Chamnes, for her compassionate care and support during Charles’s final years.
He was preceded in death by his father, Waymouth Hayes; his mother, Geneva Louise Hershman Hayes; his brother, Bobby Hayes; his sister, Patricia Hayes; and his niece, Debbie Myrick.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 21, from 3:00 to 5:00pm at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Road in Virginia Beach.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, December 22, 3:00pm at Charity United Methodist Church Cemetery, 4080 Charity Neck Road in Virginia Beach.
Charles will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his legacy of kindness, devotion, and laughter will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
