Obituary of Dolores Winifred Garrido
Dolores “Loli” W. Garrido passed away on June 19, 2018. She was born on January 11, 1934 in Brooklyn, New York to Gabriel and Beatrice Garrido who passed away in 1970 and 1985 respectively. Dolores was also predeceased by her younger brother Gabriel in 1936. She was a proud graduate of Bay Ridge High School, Class of 1952. She was also a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Mets. She loved animals supporting organizations dedicated to their welfare. In 1953 she married the late Raymond Acosta. While the marriage ended in divorce in 1971 they remained friends until Raymond’s death in 2013. During their marriage Dolores lived at various duty stations in the United States and overseas in Bremerhaven, Germany and Rota, Spain and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. She retired from the Division of Motor Vehicles after a 22-year career on January 1, 1997. Dolores leaves behind three children, five grandchildren and one great-grand son. These include her son Jeffrey Acosta, his wife Celeste, their sons Gabriel Matthew and his spouse Allison, Geoffrey Christopher and his wife Naomi and their son, Alexander Raymond, Dolores’ great-grandson. She leaves behind her son Keith and his wife Mary. Dolores also leaves behind her daughter Gabrielle Christine, her husband Jack Self and three children by her first husband Robert Smith: Jacob Hunter Smith, Aaron Phillip Smith and Dawn Christine Smith. Finally, Dolores leaves behind her youngest brother Robert Garrido and his wife Loretta of Prescott, Arizona. The Acosta and Self families will receive friends and family for a commemoration of Dolores’ life on Sunday, 24 June 2018, from 2:00 PM to 5:00PM at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia. A Mass of the Resurrection celebrating the life of Dolores will be held at St. Gregory the Great Roman Catholic Church, 5345 Virginia Beach Boulevard, Virginia Beach at 11:00 AM, Monday, June 25, 2018. A reception for family and friends will be held after the Mass of the Resurrection in the Tobias Room of St. Gregory’s. Dolores will be buried with her parents on June 27, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Linden Hill Methodist Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York. Please make a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), or the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Dolores’ name in lieu of sending flowers.
