He is survived by his children, Sam McAfee and his wife Nancy of Virginia Beach, VA, Eva McAfee Brown and her husband Edward of San Rafael, CA, and Paul McAfee of Vallejo, CA; six grandchildren, Daniel, Joseph, Justin, Ryanna, Christian, and Sara; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Douglas and James McAfee of Kentucky.
Duke played football for the Pittsburg Steelers in the 1940’s; when they still wore leather helmets. He joined the United States Army in August of 1950 during the Korean conflict. He was one of the few survivors of the battle of Hamburger Hill and received the Combat Infantry Badge, the Korean Service Medal, and one Bronze Star.
After the war, Duke returned home and went into the trucking industry, which became his lifelong occupation. He shared his love of travel and the road with his sons and grandsons. Even once he retired, he still kept up with the day to day travels of his son with his atlas always on hand to see what the best route was for him to take. Growing up on a farm, once retired Duke spent many years enjoying his garden, and giving tips to family and friends. He was a quiet gentle man, of strong faith, and loved to spend time with his family. Duke never knew a stranger and was loved by all who met him. He took special delight in seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who loved to share his cookies with him.
The family would like to give a special thanks to his devoted companion aide Margarita Doctor, who was a tremendous blessing to Duke and the family over the last four years.
Duke will be greatly missed by his family, but they take comfort in knowing that he had taken his salvation in Jesus Christ and will be watching over them from Heaven.
