Edward J. Ryan Sr.

Edward J. Ryan, 95, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 3rd. A native of Norfolk he grew up in the Brambleton area of the city and graduated from Maury High School in 1935. For many years he coached the Park Place football team and those years were some of his fondest memories.

Eddie was a World War II veteran serving as a rifleman with the 329th Army Infantry Division and a retired civil servant.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Stewart Ryan, his parents Irene Owen Ryan and Patrick Joseph Ryan, and his lifelong best friends Harry and Elizabeth Ball.

Left to cherish his memory are two sons and one daughter, Edward J. (Joe) Ryan, Jr., Stewart O. Ryan and Irene R. Vaught; eight grandchildren, Joseph, Robin, Laura, Amy, Crystal, Mary, Wendy and Patrick; and 8 great-grandchildren. The family would like to acknowledge Gayle and Shirley Sutton and Teresa Ryan Land for their love and support.

Viewing will be on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, 11:00 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk.
