Hilda Mae Garrett

She was born March 10, 1928 in Winston-Salem, NC and moved to Virginia in her early teens. She began a successful career in the banking industry originally at Seaboard Bank in Norfolk, VA. From there her strong will and determination led her up the ranks to ultimately become branch manager/ vice president of the Pembroke Branch of Life Savings Bank in Virginia Beach. She retired from Life Savings Bank after 28 years of service in 1993.

Hilda was predeceased by her mother, Clara M. Spaugh in 1994 and the love of her life, Robert W. Garrett in 2003, after 50 years of marriage. She is survived by her daughter, SanDee R. Martin and husband Jimmy; granddaughter, Michele C. Nielsen and husband Adam; and stepson, Mark Garrett and wife Pam.

Our family wishes to express our sincerest gratitude to all of the angels at Seaside Health Center and Medi Home Health and Hospice for your amazing love and care. You all went above and beyond. Hilda loved you very much.

During her time of declining health there were many dedicated physicians involved in her care. Special thanks would like to be extended to Drs. Nicole Padmore, Michael Grassia, Nadeem Inayat, Gordon Stokes and Gunadhar Panigrahi. You have all meant a great deal to not only Hilda but to our family as well.

The family will receive friends at their home, 3125 Winchester Lane in Virginia Beach, for a celebration of her life Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013 from 3pm to 7pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hilda’s name to S.M.I.L.E., Inc, 101 West Main Street, suite 7000, Norfolk, VA, 23510.
