Hildegard was born in Stuttgart, Germany on January 26, 1925; the beloved first daughter of the late Emilie and Ernst Schrack. Along with her parents, at the young age of 2, Hildegard immigrated to the United States and resided in Dearborn, Michigan. As a USO hostess, Hildegard met her sweetheart of over 65 years, Wallace Reed Cross. They were married after Wallace returned home from World War II. She enjoyed her life as a loving mother to her three children, whom she is survived by, Susan Cross Lasky (husband Howard), Thomas Lee Cross, and Frederick Alan Cross (wife Karin). Having left high school early in order to work to help her family, she later completed her education, becoming a nurse and working at Saint Mary’s hospital. As the wife of a firefighter, she made many lifelong friends in Livonia, Michigan as well as in Spring Hill, Florida where she and Wally enjoyed retirement for over 20 years.
Along with her children, Hildegard is survived by her seven grandchildren AJ Booth (wife Kosal), Erica Whitley (husband Greg), Erin Cross, Patrick Cross, Bryan Cross, Patricia Cross, and Sean Reed Cross and her four great-grandchildren Justin Booth, Ellie Booth, Audrey Whitley and Trevor Whitley. Hildegard is also survived by her loving sister, Marlene Schrack Nelson (husband John), two very special cousins Anneliese Belknap (husband John) and Ingebord Loeffler (husband Heinz), and her niece and nephews and extended family.
Alongside her loving husband, Hildegard Cross will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Hildegard’s special friends and neighbors at the Commons at Princess Anne in Virginia Beach for all of their love, support, and friendship.
