

He was born March 2, 1931 in Seminole, OK to the late William J. and Carrie Hertz.
Mr. Hertz proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp., retiring after 23 years. He served faithfully in the Korean and Viet Nam wars. His military career took him to Japan, California, Hawaii, and the East Coast. After the military, he continued his career as a teacher for the Virginia Beach Public School System. He was a member of Charity United Methodist Church, and was an active member of the Pungo Kiwanis Club. He participated with the Virginia Wetlands Board, with the Creeds Volunteer Rescue Squad and spearheaded the creation of the Senior Center at Creeds.
He was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Jacquelyn Whitehurst Hertz.
He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Hertz and her husband Leslie Getty; his son, James Otto Hertz Jr. and his wife Char Hertz; his three grandsons, Sam, Tommy, and Jason; brothers, John F. Hertz, Jessie C. Hertz, Norman R. Hertz, and Eugene Brown; and sisters, Mary Osgood and Virginia Anne Blake.
Jim’s family thanks the dedicated caregivers, friends and community who have given graciously and with open hearts to making this last chapter of Jim’s life the most it could be.
