

Janice Mercer Murray, 77, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away on November 12, 2014 peacefully in her home. Janice is predeceased by her parents William T. and Ruby E. Mercer and her husband of 43 years, Percy J. Murray. She is survived by her son, Thomas L. Murray and his wife, Glenda; a niece, Melissa Waide and her husband Bill; and grandchildren Makayla B. Murray, Kenny, Ryan, Holly and Sabrina Waide; as well as, many other loved relatives and special friends and neighbors.
Janice was born in Wilson County, NC on August 24, 1937 and moved to Norfolk, VA as a military family. She graduated from Norview High School in Norfolk in 1955 and began her career in the banking industry at Bank of America. After many years, she transferred to a Civil Service position in finance and retired after more than 20 years.
She was raised in Trinity Baptist Church in Norfolk, but has been a long standing member of Calvary Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. She participated in many outreach projects at her church coordinating the food pantry, Christmas gift boxes for underserved children overseas and vacation Bible school. She was a member of the Red Hat’s Society and has been a dedicated volunteer at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters for more than ten years. With her husband, she was a member of the Dixie Squares Square Dancers.
Arrangements for Mrs. Murray are being handled by the Smith & Williams Funeral Home on Princess Anne Rd in Virginia Beach. There will be a visitation at Calvary Baptist Church in Virginia Beach on Friday, November 14 from 6-8pm. Her celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, November 15 1 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church officiated by Senior Pastor, Bubba Pugh, with the burial to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Norfolk.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters or Calvary Baptist Church. The family of Janice Murray wishes to thank all her medical care providers, friends, neighbors and church members for their care and concern during her life and illness.
