

Joan Suzanne Cooksey, born August 13, 1948 in Norfolk, VA went to be with our Lord on Sunday, September 13, 2015 in her sleep at home in Chesapeake, VA. She was the daughter of the late William H. and Joan B. Cooksey.
Suzy was a summer counselor at Camp Thomas E. Lightfoot in Hinton, WV for several years. Suzy retired from the City of Norfolk where she was employed for many years for the Parks and Recreation Dept. and was a past president of Virginia Recreation and Parks Society.
Suzy loved basketball and played for Norfolk Catholic High School and Old Dominion University achieving recognition for her abilities.
Left to cherish her memory is her sister, Nancy Cooksey Carollo and husband, Saverio (Sonny); her brothers, William L. Cooksey and wife, Cheryl and John Cooksey. She touched the hearts of a host of nieces and nephews: Joan C. Stokes (Chris), Nancy T. Carollo, John W. Cooksey (Melanie) Rachel C. Thomas (Matt) and Katie Cooksey.
Suzy also will be lovingly remembered by seven great nieces and nephews: Carson Grace Stokes, Nicholas Saverio Stokes, Miranda, Dylan and Addison Cooksey, Beachlynn and Blakely Thomas. Suzy had many friends but Chuck Dunn and Sam Briley were very special to her.
Suzy was a faithful servant to our Lord and was very involved in her church all the while maintained a positive attitude with a wonderful smile on her face despite many health issues.
Smith & Williams Funeral Home (Kempsville) is handling the cremation wishes for Suzy.
A memorial service will be conducted by The Reverend Kathleen M. Bobbitt at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 5181 Singleton Way, Virginia Beach, VA 23462 at 2:00pm on Saturday, September 19, 2015.
