Cherished husband and father, Calimerio “Larry” Gatchalian Madrigal gently passed away with loving family members present Sunday, September 3, 2023.
The son of the late Generoso and Felisa Madrigal, Larry was born in Mindoro, Philippines on July 31, 1942.
Larry believed in putting your mind and heart into accomplishing your dreams, giving to those in need and living with passion. He did it by serving honorably in the United States Navy for over 20 years retiring in 1978 then earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Saint Leo College; settling in Virginia Beach, VA. Larry went on to be a restaurant owner, an insurance salesman and contract administrator.
Larry was a person of deep faith giving much of his time to the community. He was an active member at his Catholic church and within the Filipino community. Larry was a founding member of the Samahang Tagalog Filipino Organization of Virginia and former President of CUFOT – Council of United Filipino Organizations of Tidewater, which was dedicated to celebrating the diversity and interests of all Filipino cultural groups across Hampton Roads.
Larry loved playing golf and going ocean fishing. He never said no to trying new foods or helping set up a backyard barbeque. He was generous to a fault especially with his dedication to family and traveling to family celebrations. And no family reunion was ever complete without having “Uncle Larry’s Famous Lighter than Air Pancakes” for breakfast.
Family was Larry’s greatest source of pride. He is predeceased by four of his brothers Abe, Luther (adopted), Rafael and Sonny. Larry is survived by the woman he married in 1966, Remedios; along with his two sons Larry Gene and Kenneth Lee and their wives; Melissa and Alison. Larry so loved his five grandchildren Emma, Sam, Ben, Simon and Lily.
He is also survived by his remaining brothers and sisters and their spouses: Jun (Susan), Jim (Nida), Pete “Toto”, Rose “Nene” Cuci (Dante), and Susan Catahan (Rudy). In addition, other close surviving family members include: Eduardo and Judy Casingal, Jun and Victoria Quedado, Dods and Merla Casingal, and Jun and Nilda Casingal. Along with his close survivors Larry has a wealth of loving extended family cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Larry sought a life of big experiences and even bigger larger-than-life stories to tell, and that spirit will always endure as everyone’s lasting memory of him.
For family and friends, a visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at 11:30am in the chapel area at The Church of the Ascension, 4853 Princess Anne Rd, Virginia Beach, VA.
