Mary Catherine Zagorski

Mary Catherine Zagorski, a beloved matriarch and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026, at the age of 99. Born on April 6, 1927, in Varilla, Kentucky. Mary Catherine, often affectionately known simply as Catherine or “Kat” lived a full life devoted to her family and was loved by all who knew her. Catherine was preceded in death by her devoted husband, LtCdr, USN, Theodore Stanley Zagorski or “Ski”, whose memory she cherished deeply. Together, they built a family grounded in love, respect, and laughter. This legacy continues to flourish through their children: daughter Jan Timpano, sons Don Zagorski and Michael Zagorski, and daughter Sandra Pristas.

Catherine's loving and nurturing spirit extended to her six grandchildren Tony Timpano, Tina Winston, Allison Pristas, Jenna Pristas, Greg Zagorski and Leigh Zagorski Belsha and four great-grandchildren, each of whom also carries a piece of her heart. Early in life after completing her education, Catherine worked as a stenographer for several years. She then married and soon became a devoted wife and Mother. The Navy took them to Yugoslavia, Arlington, Virginia and Pensacola, Florida before settling in Norfolk, Virginia.

Aside from family, Catherine also enjoyed painting, sewing, needle work and was an avid gardener. Music was another of Catherine's passions. She taught herself how to play the piano and enjoyed playing for all visitors. Catherine’s life was filled with kindness and grace and always greeted everyone with a smile and genuine love. She possessed a sharp wit and spontaneous sense of humor that endeared everyone. She also had the “gift of gab” and loved telling stories of her life, her family and adventures.

The beach held a special place in Catherine's heart. Family vacations in OBX were treasured times, filled with laughter and the simple pleasure of being together. These moments were the blessings of Catherine's life—celebrations of family, love, and the beauty found in everyday experiences.

As we bid farewell to our Mom, Grandmother and friend Mary Catherine Zagorski, we remember a life well-lived and a woman deeply cherished. Her legacy of love, laughter, and generosity will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. A service will be held to honor Catherine's extraordinary life.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am, on May 13, 2026, at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. Burial will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park, 1110 North Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Catherine's name to a charity of your choice, celebrating her spirit of kindness and giving. Mary Catherine Zagorski, your laughter will echo in our hearts forever, and your love will remain our guiding light. Rest in peace, dear Catherine.
