

Matthew was a devoted husband, loving family member, and cherished friend to many. Beyond his professional life, Matthew was a true Renaissance man who embraced a wide array of interests and hobbies that enriched his life and the lives of those around him.
Matthew's life was beautifully enriched by his marriage to his beloved wife, Audrey Wilcox, with whom he shared eight years of marriage and fifteen years of companionship. Their bond was a testament to enduring love and partnership.
He was a passionate hockey player who cherished the camaraderie of his teammates, and he found joy in spending time with both friends and family. An avid outdoorsman, Matthew loved fishing, boating, and camping, always seeking adventure and serenity in nature. His love for music was evident in his skillful playing of the bass and guitar, bringing melodies to family gatherings and quiet moments alike. Matthew also had a deep appreciation for NASCAR racing, cars, and bikes, which fueled his enthusiasm for speed and engineering.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Melissa D. Hess, and his grandfather, Ray Elswick. Matthew leaves behind a loving family, including his wife, Audrey Wilcox; his grandmother, Dolly Elswick Couch, and her husband Larry; his sisters, Emily Beverly and Linsey Helbert; and his nieces and nephews, Bradley Pettis, Silas Pettis, Nick Davis, Isabell Davis, and Sadie Helbert.
A Public Visitation will be held at Smith & Williams Funeral Home/Kemp, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462,
US, on February 27, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
