Maynard Garfield Handy

Maynard Garfield Handy, 78, formerly of Axton, VA, passed away July 27, 2026, in Virginia Beach, VA. He was born in Bassett, VA, on June 18, 1948, to the late Garfield Handy and the late Clara Keiger Handy.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Gerald Ray Handy.

Maynard served in the United States Marine Corps after graduating from Drewry Mason High School before being honorably discharged. He worked at Appalachian Power Company in Fieldale, VA where he completed his training as an electrical engineering technician. During his time in the Henry County area, he enjoyed being a member of Starling Avenue Baptist Church in Martinsville, VA.

Maynard was a beloved brother and friend who was a car enthusiast and enjoyed bowling, woodburning art, and country music.

He is survived by his long-time companion, Loretta Carter of Martinsville; one brother, Roger L. Handy (Sylvia) of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Brenda H. Prillaman (Ronnie) of Martinsville and Bonnie H. Isley (Barry) of Martinsville; an aunt, Christine I. Setliff of Bassett; nieces and nephews Jeffrey W. Prillaman, Lisa R. Prillaman-Murray, Christy I. Barnett, Elizabeth A. Isley, Wesley L. Handy, Marshall A. Handy, and Emily H. O’Neal; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Bassett Funeral Service, 3665 Fairystone Park Highway, Bassett, VA 24055. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. Interment will take place immediately after at Mount Hermon Church of the Brethren Cemetery, 144 Mount Hermon Church Rd, Bassett, VA 24055.
