OBITUARY

Philip Conrad Chasse Jr.

March 17, 1944 – August 7, 2026
Obituary of Philip Conrad Chasse Jr.
IN THE CARE OF

Smith & Williams Funeral Home/Kempsville

Philip Conrad Chasse Jr., of Virginia Beach, Virginia, was born on March 17, 1944, and died on August 7, 2026, at the age of 82. He leaves behind a life marked by long service and deep interests.

Phil served in the United States Navy for 30 years, spending part of his career as an enlisted sailor and part as a commissioned officer. He especially loved being at sea and “driving ships,” and he took pride in the work and responsibility that came with his service.

After his Navy career, Phil spent 22 years in industry in Operational Test and Evaluation. He approached this work with commitment and a strong sense of purpose, and it became an important second chapter of his professional life.

Phil was deeply interested in pioneers and hunters, and he admired figures such as Lewis & Clark, Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, Jim Shockey, and close friends Roger, Ted, and Dave. These stories and people meant a great deal to him throughout his life. He was active in the James River Hunt Club, where he made friends, he considered family.

In his own words: “Phil left behind everything (I guess they were right—you can’t take it with you). He loved his country, hunting, golfing, a good game of blackjack, and travel up and down the East Coast.”

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol; his daughter, Brenda and husband Joseph Morrill; and his parents, Philip and Theresa Chasse.

He is survived by his daughter, Karen, and her husband, Troy; his granddaughter Courtney, her husband, Andy, and their children Lydia, Warren, and Caroline; and his grandson Justin and his wife, Jennifer. His brothers David and Steven Chasse.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hunters for the Hungry or Wounded Warriors, organizations that reflect causes important to Phil.
