Roger William Young, Sr., a true father, military man and devoted husband, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2025, in Norfolk, Virginia, at the age of 85. Born on October 21, 1939, in West Rumney, New Hampshire, Roger lived a life marked by dedication to his family and his country.
Roger proudly served in the United States Navy for 22 years, during which he honorably fought in the Vietnam War. Following his distinguished military career, he continued his commitment to public service through a successful tenure in the civil service, from which he eventually retired.
In his personal life, Roger found joy in simple pleasures. He was an avid fan of old Westerns, with "Bonanza" being a particular favorite, and in his later years, he delighted in watching game shows. Roger had a fondness for dining at IHOP, and before the passing of his beloved wife Doris, their cherished afternoon dates often included shopping at BJ's and enjoying a hotdog together.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Alice Young; his beloved wife, Doris Young, with whom he would have celebrated 65 years of marriage this April; two brothers; and three sisters.
He is survived by his sons, Steven, Roger, and Joseph Young; three brothers; two sisters; and many other loving family members and friends. As the eldest of his siblings, Roger held a special place in the hearts of those who knew him.
A visitation for Roger will be held Friday, August 15, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Smith & Williams Funeral Home/Kempsville, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. A Funeral Service will occur Saturday, August 16, 2025, starting at 2:00 PM at Smith & Williams Funeral Home.
