Velma Gregory-Cartwright, age 91, of Virginia Beach, Virginia passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents Lonnie and Mittie Murphy, her first husband William T. "Sonny" Gregory and her late husband Robert Cartwright, two daughters Susan Murphy and Bettye Hensley.
Velma Gregory Cartwright, a beloved sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, has made her journey home. The many family members left behind will miss her joyous smile and the way she lived life to its fullest. Velma was a lifelong member of Charity United Methodist Church in Va. Beach, Va. She served with the United Methodist Women, participated in mission trips, and sang in the choir. Velma lived a full and active life. Music filled her soul. Velma shared joy and happiness from her heart with all she met. Velma lived to let her light shine. She made cakes, bread, and dinners for neighbors and church gatherings.
Velma married William T. “Sonny” Gregory, and they raised 5 children and was blessed with 13 Grandchildren and 22 Great Grandchildren. The many grand & great-grandchildren were her crown while on earth. Holding a new baby would bring that big smile she was known for. Velma loved all her family and her family adored her.
Velma drove the school bus and worked in the cafeteria at Kellam High School in Va. Beach, Va. and sometimes would bring her grandchildren along to ride the bus in a car seat. Married to Sonny, who hunted and fished, Velma regularly cleaned and cooked wild game and fish. Velma was a bundle of energy and good cheer. She was always on the go and loved to have fun. “Dee Dee” or “Granny” as she was lovingly called by her grandchildren never passed up a chance to play board games, dominos, and cornhole. A fierce competitor and loved ice cream. Cancer tried, but was no match for her determination.
Velma found a second chance at love when she met Robert “Bobby” Cartwright. They were married and enjoyed years together. The joy they shared together was truly a gift from God. Velma beamed with happiness.
Velma gave her all to her family. Never without her camera, she captured memories for the entire family to cherish. The family has sorted through these pictures since her passing and found peace, comfort, and joy reminiscing a life full of love and laughter.
Velma is the most cherished Ground Hog known to Pungo with her one-hit wonder “I’m A Little Ground Hog” song. She has sung this for everyone she met, including hospital staff within her last few days of life. If you knew Velma, you knew this song.
Late in life, Velma needed some assistance. God sent a Visiting Angel named Patti who brought compassion and care for our mother in a way that will always be remembered. Velma loved Patti dearly. Surely, heaven holds a special place for Patti.
Above all, a testament to a life well-lived, Velma took her children to church every Sunday. She prayed daily for each child by name until her death. “Velma Lou” as she was lovingly nicknamed, leaves a legacy of kindness, a spirit of service, and grace for the unconditional love of family. A family enriched with love and tenderness will miss her dearly until the day we meet her again.
