
He was predeceased by this father, Wallace Maybery, Sr., his mother, Edna Earle Dinsmore Clarke, and his brother, Randy Maybery.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Gale Nicholson; brother, Phillip E. Maybery (Susan); sister, Sharon Dines; daughters, Brooke Thome (Joe), Lisa Flinn (Mike); and stepdaughter, Stephanie Hale (Charles). He had 7 granddaughters and 1 grandson.
Wally was born in Pampa, TX, and attended Paschal (TX) High School. He enlisted in the Navy after high school as a Sonar Technician ultimately converting to Oceanographic Systems Technician. He was a member of inspection teams that went to Barbados, Antigua, Iceland, Newfoundland, Bermuda, Rota, Naples, Azores, Jamaica, Cuba, Scotland & Wales. After his 20 years in the Navy, he served as Supply Officer at the DODS high school in Naples. His OT experience landed him a job with Hughes Technology/Hughes Aircraft. He left Hughes to enroll at Norfolk State University to complete his Bachelor’s degree. He taught 4th grade for Virginia Beach Schools for 13 years.
Wally was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Kempsville where he served on the Vestry, was Building and Grounds chair, sang in the choir, and was instrumental in starting a clown troupe called Jubilee Jesters of which he was first president. He also brought the 13 Fold Flag Ceremony to Emmanuel which was conducted by members of the 2nd Chivalric District, i.e. Grice and Portsmouth Commandries.
Phillip wrote Wally’s Masonic career for inclusion. Brother Wally is a Life Member in Perpetuity (LMIP) of Lynnhaven Lodge No. 220 serving as Marshal and other appointed positions. Companion Wally is a LMLIP member of Norfolk URAC No. 1 serving as Tiler in 2005. Sir Knight Wally is a LMIP of Grice Commandery No. 16, serving as Prelate before and after ultimately serving as the Eminent Commander. He was also a member of Portsmouth Commandery No. 5 and eventually transferred his LMIP to Virginia Beach Commandery No. 36 becoming a Charter Member. He served in various appointed positions of the Grand Commandery and ultimately was appointed Eminent Grand Inspector General where he standardized the Ritual and Tactics of the ten Chivalric Districts for the reception of the Grand Commander and other Officials. He received the Knight of Siloam from the Grand Commandery of VA for his financial contributions to the Knights Templar Eye Foundation. He was named a Baldwin-Brown Fellow for his generous financial contributions to the Permanent Fund of the Grand Commandery of Virginia. He received the Knight Commander of the Temple from the Grand Encampment Knights Templar, USA for his hard work and devotion to Templar Masonry. He is a Life Member of Hampton Roads Chapter No. 5 National Sojourners and The Heroes of ’76 where he served as Chaplain. He was a founding member of the Knights of Solomon and the Twin Pillars Widows Son Masonic Riders Association. He was second State President serving four years. He loved riding his motorcycle and visiting other Chapters and State Grand Gatherings. He was also a member of other invitational Masonic Bodies serving wherever needed.
Appreciation is expressed to Mikelle Rappaport of Golden Lifestyle Partners and the staff at Bickford Senior Living Center for their care of Wally over the last two years. Anatomical Gift Registry is in charge of organ donation.
A funeral service for Wally will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 1:00 pm. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Wally will be interred in the Emmanuel columbarium.
