Educated in San Mateo, he graduated from San Mateo High School in 1956 where he played varsity baseball and was inducted into the SMHS Hall of Fame as the league’s all-star first baseman. He aspired to be a professional baseball player, but he changed his mind when he met his future wife. Together they decided to go into Christian education and began attending college with that goal in mind. Upon graduating grom a Christian teacher’s college near Chicago, they married and embarked upon a teaching career which took them to Wausau, Wisconsin, Sacramento, and ultimately Visalia. Having a talent for music, Ed was also an organist and choir director at the churches where he served. He was also principal of the school in Sacramento and here in Visalia.
When retirement arrived, the hobbies he had set aside for so long finally received his full attention: stamp collecting, seashells, and rocks and minerals. He was able to join the Visalia Philatelic Society and made many friends swapping stamps.
Post-retirement also found him lending his musical abilities at the Exeter congregation where he played for their Sunday services.
Surviving Ed are his wife Dolores (Dee) of 64 years, sons David and James (Jim), sister Marian Masenthin and nephew Mark Masenthin, both of Indianapolis, and cousins.
A memorial service will take place on July 26th at Grace Lutheran Church, 1111 S. Conyer in Visalia beginning at 11:00am. A luncheon reception will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Christian School or a charity of your choice.
Arrangements are being entrusted to Miller Memorial Chapel.
