She grew up in Mt. Ida, Arkansas, the youngest of ten children. She celebrated her 90th birthday January 27, 2017. She was a remarkable and delightful “LADY” who will be missed by many.
At the age of 17 she married Otho Scrimshire. He preceded her in death. They started their family with 4 children; the eldest being Martha Pickle of Visalia, CA, Norma Scrimshire of Dallas, TX (preceded in death), Phillip Scrimshire of Bakersfield, CA (preceded in death) and Thomas Scrimshire of Springtown, TX.
As the family grew so did Iris’s desire to open her own bakery, which she did in Ashland, Oregon at the age of 27. Several years later the family moved to Oildale, CA, where she managed a Winchell’s Donut Shop. She was very community active during her life - she belonged to Love, Inc. as well as Pals, Elks Club, Kiwanis, and Women of Moose Lodge.
She moved to Visalia in 1970 where she and the love of her life, Lealand Workman (Lee), began their journey for 23 years. During this time they both worked in the insurance field for Homesteaders Life Company, helping people between Bakersfield and Fresno. They went to work with Miller Memorial Chapel and worked together up to his death in 1993. Both Iris and Lee were #1 with Miller Memorial Chapel for 5 years. During this time, they received many plaques and Iris received a million-dollar club card and a ring with Z diamonds on it. Even at the age of 80 she was still going strong with her best friend, Les Harrell, mowing yards and enjoying going out to eat every chance she got.
Her journey with the Lord started at the age of 21. She helped to build the UPC Church in Grants Pass, Oregon, another church in Lamont, California and in 1981 helping with Valley Worship Center in Visalia. Her journey ended with being one of the few that helped to establish Heritage Church in Visalia, where she continued to serve the Lord until her passing.
“Mamo” to her 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren as she was known, will be greatly missed by them, they were the light of her eyes and joy to her heart each day. She also has three step children that she dearly loved as her own, along with their spouses and grandchildren. Iris was blessed with LOVE from all her children and grandchildren, and was especially thankful they have all been baptized and received the Holy Ghost.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 3, 2017 from 3 – 7 p.m. at Miller Memorial Chapel, 1120 W. Goshen Ave., Visalia, CA. Celebration of Life services will be held at Miller Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be follow at Visalia Public Cemetery.
