John Thomas Brooks

John was born in Oakland, California on March 14, 1931 to loving parents Joseph Franklin and Anna Dorothy Kovec Brooks. He was raised and educated in Healdsburg, California, graduating from Healdsburg High School in 1949. John entered the United States Marine Corp on Sept. 8, 1950 and served during the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of Sargent. He received a Purple Heart Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal and United Nations Medal. Following his discharge in 1952, he continued his education at the Santa Rosa College and received his degree in Entomology from UC Berkeley. John married Diane Shoemaker in Gardnerville, Nevada on November 7, 1954. They made their home in Brawley, California for a time, moved to Fresno, CA and then to Visalia, CA in 1958. John worked for OxyChem for over 25 years as a Pest Control Salesman. He was a dedicated Christian and a member of GateWay Church of Visalia where he served as deacon and taught Sunday school for many years. He was also a member of Gideons and worked diligently for the organization. He also enjoyed Jail Ministry. John suffered a stroke in 2004 but was still able to enjoy traveling to many countries and Hawaii. He was an avid reader, enjoyed watching old movies and loved history. John had enjoyed hiking, swimming and canoeing, and had a large collection of LIFE magazines and had been an Eagle Scout as a young man. John loved his dogs and could be found befriending other dogs.

He is survived by his wife, Dinah of Visalia; two daughters, Cindi Brooks of Santa Rosa, CA and Lisa K. Dowling of Placerville, CA.

John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Joseph.

Family and friends are invited to attend graveside services to be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Visalia District Cemetery. Memorial services will follow at GateWay Church of Visalia at 12:30 p.m.
