Mary Eileen Gomes, 78, died on September 4, 2026. Born on April 26, 1948, in Tulare, California, Mary Eileen lived a life marked by steady devotion, enduring faith, and a quiet ability to inspire those around her. She resided in Visalia, California.
Mary Eileen attended Buena Vista and Garden Elementary Schools and graduated from Kit Carson Elementary School. She later graduated from Tulare Union High School, the College of the Sequoias, and Cal State University, Fresno, and received a teaching credential in Elementary Education from CSU Fresno—preparing for the vocation that would become her life’s work.
For 40 years, Mary Eileen served as an elementary school teacher at Outside Creek Elementary School. Teaching was her love, and her greatest legacy was the countless students she guided with care, patience, and purpose. Proud to be an Outside Creek Swamp rat, she brought to her classroom a steadfast commitment that made her not only beloved, but deeply influential in the lives of generations of children and families.
Her faith was the foundation of her life. A faithful Catholic devoted to God, . Through years of service, she offered a consistent example of devotion expressed in action—showing up, teaching, and encouraging others with sincerity and grace.
Beyond her work and ministry, Mary Eileen found joy in the simple, living beauty of the world around her. While teaching was her love, her flower garden was her passion—roses, lilies, sweet peas, daffodils, and every flower she could coax to bloom in the valley heat. She also had a remarkable tenderness for animals, never meeting one she could not befriend and tame. Over the years she gave many dogs, cats, and even a rat on occasion a loving home, and she raised many calves as well—accepting more than a few headbutts from those eager for their milk. She loved to read, especially history books and Agatha Christie mysteries, a reflection of her lifelong curiosity and steady, thoughtful spirit.
Mary Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, Tony S. and Lillian Gomes; her brother, Anthony J. Gomes; her sister-in-law, Donna Gomes; and her nephew, Joseph Gomes. She is survived by her brother Edward (Patricia) Gomes of Oakhurst, CA; her sister Susan (Robert) Brown of Visalia; her nephews Edward (Antonella) Gomes of Mesa, AZ, Robert (Lauren) Brown Jr. of Livermore, CA, Toney Gomes of Visalia, and John (Colleen) Gomes of Florence, Oregon; her nieces Theresa (Steve) Bollier of Clovis, CA, Maria (Daniel) Paulsen of Auburn, CA, and Katie Brown of Visalia; along with numerous great nieces and nephews. Mary Eileen was an inspiration to her nieces and nephews and remained devoted to them throughout her life.
As she always said, “Vaya con Dios. Take care and keep to the path.”
