Sunrise ~ February 13, 1940
Sunset ~ October 9, 2018
To know Loraine was to love her for her quiet kindness. She left this world during a beautiful sunset Tuesday evening, October 9, 2018. Her sunrise was February 13, 1940, when she was born to Steve and Nellie Guill in Hanford, CA. She attended Goshen School, Mt. Whitney High School and College of Sequoias, earning her AA degree. Loraine worked at the Tulare County Welfare Department after graduating from C.O.S. She and the “love of her life”, Manuel T. ‘Nick’ Bettencourt, enjoyed 46 years of marriage until his passing in 2008.
Loraine is survived, remembered and loved by many family and friends. Survivors include her three sons, Melvin and Sean of Campbell, Michael and Karen of Exeter, and Mark and Dena of Visalia. Loraine will be greatly missed by her six grandchildren, Jessica, Janelle, Mallory, Nathan, Samuel and Jordan; her great grandchildren, Riley, Grant, Macy and Luke; her sister Margie and many nieces and nephews.
After her children started school, Loraine took on a part time job with the Tulare County Child Care. She was there for 27 years and was supervisor of the center her last 13 years before retiring. While she enjoyed sewing, cooking and doing volunteer work with the Seniors in Goshen, her last big project was a quilt of ‘Goshen T-shirts’ made with children’s drawings from her pre-school. She also enjoyed working with the Blanket Ladies and knitting hats for babies and people with cancer. Loraine was a proud member of the Portuguese Fraternal Society of America.
