Waino Mathew Peterson

Waino’s early years took him from Evanston, Illinois, to St. Maries, Idaho, where he moved in 1942. He graduated from St. Maries High School in 1952, serving as Senior class president and earning letters in both baseball and boxing. His commitment to learning carried into higher education, where he earned a B.S. in Social Science from the University of Idaho, an M.A. from the University of Missouri, and a doctorate from Nova University in Miami, Florida.

He served in the U.S. Army for four years, and he devoted 31 years to teaching social science at C.O.S. Through steady work, thoughtful guidance, and a generous investment in others, Waino helped students better understand the responsibilities and promise of America’s political democracy. In retirement, he continued to pursue the wider world, traveling to destinations across the globe and visiting all 50 states.

Waino’s life was also shaped by deep family love. His first wife, Lois Justus, preceded him in death after 28 years together. He later married Dee Peterson, and they welcomed their son, Paul, who married Jill. Waino was also blessed with a daughter, Kari, who married Darryl Hardwick. He cherished his grandchildren—Haley, Jace, and Cade Peterson, and Eric, Paige, and Trey Edwards—and truly treasured the time and activities shared with his children and grandchildren.

A lifelong outdoorsman, Waino found joy in hunting and fishing in Idaho and California. He also gave generously of his time to the community, serving for years as a docent guide at the Tulare County Museum, participating as a lunchtime member of PH, holding membership in the Beta Kappa society, spending a decade with the Visalia Dance Club, and serving as a team member of the Tulare County Grand Jury. In each setting, his compassion, steady work ethic, and quiet wisdom were evident in the way he showed up for others and for the community he called home.

Waino’s life reflected a belief in service, learning, and civic responsibility. In his own words: “I truly had a great full life and enjoyed the season along the way saying... Be a life-long learner and vote, be part of the process.”

He is survived by his son, Paul Peterson.
