Carol Owens Lucas Sr.

Carol was born April 22, 1932. He was raised in Gaston, SC and was the son of Lester R. and Inez Wise Lucas. He graduated in 1950 from Brookland-Cayce High School and started construction work at an early age alongside his father. He continued as owner of Carol O. Lucas General Contractor Company Inc., a family business in West Columbia with his first wife (now deceased Jo Ann Dillard Lucas), his son, Cal Lucas (now deceased) and daughter, Kathy J. Lucas. He ran this very successful and reputable construction company for 60 years and retired in 2020 due to health problems.

Carol enjoyed car racing for many years, attending many races and always watching them on TV. He loved spending time on long walks with his four-legged friends, Brantley and Lizzy. He also adored a special pup he rescued named Lucky who has already crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Carol also loved good food and friends and especially enjoyed dinner at Murrays every Friday night with them.

Carol is survived by his wife of 38 years, Betty Lucas, of the home. He is also survived by daughters, Kathryn J. Lucas of West Columbia, Kimberly R. Lucas of Cayce and daughter-in-law, Kramer Hanshaw of West Columbia; grandsons, Tyler L. Harrison (Elizabeth) of Cumming, GA, Trenton K. Harrison of West Columbia and Parker Hanshaw (Samantha) of Leland, NC; granddaughters, Copeland and Amelia Hanshaw of West Columbia; great grandsons, Pax Evander Harrison and Rhett Augustus Harrison of Cumming, GA; along with a great granddaughter due in August.

Carol was preceded in death by his first wife, Jo Ann Dillard Lucas; son, Carol Owens Lucas Jr. (Cal) and stepson, Darrell Hanshaw. Carol also leaves behind many close family members and friends.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 27, at 11:00 am at Southland Memorial Gardens, 700 West Dunbar Road, West Columbia, SC 29170. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel, is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Brookland United Methodist Church, 541 Meeting Street, West Columbia, SC 29169.
