Sixty-nine years after accepting Christ as his Lord and Savior; and 42 years spent ministering to bring others to salvation, Reverend Carroll Hurley, 91, of West Columbia, exchanged the old rugged cross for his crown. He passed into heaven on June 5, 2023.
Reverend Hurley was born in McVeigh, KY on March 12, 1932 to Emory and Zennie Hurley. Reverend Hurley grew up in Kentucky, then moved to Michigan at 18 years old to begin what would be a 35 year career at General Motors. Carroll was a proud GM man, but GM could never measure up to his devotion to ministry.
Carroll and his treasured wife, Marie, were called into the ministry of the Church of God in Detroit, Michigan. This would begin his passion. This passion drove him to start a church called Burt Road Church of God where he preached the gospel until he and Marie were called to minister in Virginia at the Great Bridge Church of God. In 1991, Pastor Hurley retired from ministry to care for Marie, and did so lovingly care for her until her death in 2000. His passion reignited and he built a church in Pelion, South Carolina and called it Dolorosa Worship Center (The Way of the Cross). He grew this church with a desire stemmed from his preacher brother's testimony "Thank God for Jesus".
Reverend Carroll Hurley is survived by five daughters, Wanda (Dean) Culliton of Manistique, Michigan, Judy Hilson (Ron) of West Columbia, SC, Marsha (John) Sarbok of West Columbia, SC, Cheryl (John) Fouche of Pelion, SC and Darla (Ernest) Creel of Pelion, SC. Carroll is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his dedicated wife Marie and grandson Brandon Blalock. Carroll was the last living child of Emory and Zennie Hurley, after being predeceased by his 8 brothers and 6 sisters.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 8 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel. Funeral service at Dolorosa Worship Center, 365 Old Charleston Road, Pelion on Friday, June 9 at 11:00 am, with interment at Southland Memorial Gardens-Chapel of Hope. Officiants are Reverend Donald Jones and Reverend Stefan Dover.
Special appreciation to Judy Hilson for her unwavering love and excellent care for "her daddy.” When asked to come live and care for dad, her response was a resounding, "I would love to come care for my daddy.” Special appreciation also to Mrs. Lottie Davis (Carolina Health Care), whose friendship meant so much, and Lighthouse Hospice.
