

Doris Ann Pate Cox, born March 15, 1937, in Charleston, South Carolina, peacefully passed away on June 6, 2026, at the age of 89. She was the beloved daughter of Glyde Pate and Luerene Pate, and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life was defined by faith, family, music, and service to others.
Doris shared 65 wonderful years of marriage with her devoted husband, David Wesley Cox, Sr., building a life rooted in love, commitment, and mutual devotion. Together they created a family legacy that will continue for generations to come.
She was a proud and loving mother to her four children: David Wesley Cox, Jr. (Kathy Corley Cox), Pate Shell Cox, Michelle Lee Cox Davis (Benjiman Davis), and Lara Kellahan Cox Grande (Vincent Grande). She was a cherished grandmother to twelve grandchildren: David Cox III (Amber Cox), William Cox (Rebecca Cox), Parker Cox (Brittney Cox), Rhett Cox (Skylar Cox), Mason Cox (Carlie Cox), Campbell Cox, Khara Cox, Lundy Davis Fuchs (Rudy Fuchs), Callah Davis Truett, Jenna Davis Steiger (Peter Steiger), Gina Bella Grande, and Phebe Bliss Grande. She was also blessed to be a great-grandmother to Kelley Cox, David Cox IV, Emmie Cox, Ansley Cox, Leni Wren Fuchs, Eden Truett, Grady Cox, and Corley Ann Cox.
Doris was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David Wesley Cox, Sr., whose memory she treasured every day following his passing.
David and Doris were active and faithful members of Main Street United Methodist Church in Columbia, South Carolina, where they found spiritual fulfillment, lifelong friendships, and opportunities to serve others.
Doris devoted much of her professional life to nurturing young minds through music as a teacher at Oak Grove Elementary School. Her love of music enriched the lives of countless students, and her encouragement, patience, and enthusiasm inspired a lifelong appreciation for learning and the arts.
Family was at the center of Doris's life. She found her greatest joy in gathering with loved ones, celebrating milestones, and creating treasured memories with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also shared David's love of travel and adventure, delighting in exploring new places, experiencing different cultures, and making memories with family around the world.
Doris was known for her gentle spirit, warm smile, gracious heart, and unwavering devotion to those she loved. She touched the lives of many through her kindness, generosity, and quiet strength. Her legacy of love, faith, and family will live on through the generations she nurtured and the many lives she touched.
Doris was loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Funeral services will be held graveside on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 12:00 noon at Southland Memorial Gardens, 700 West Dunbar Road, West Columbia, South Carolina. In the event of rain, the service will be held in the chapel at Southland Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in honor of Doris's life and legacy of caring for others.
