Born on June 6, 1941 in Columbia, South Carolina, Effie was a woman defined by her extraordinary resilience. While life presented her with formidable obstacles and hardships that would have broken many, she refused to bow down to her circumstances. Instead, she met every challenge with grit, grace, and an unwavering commitment to her family.
She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters: Debbie Smith (Adrian), Cindy Webber (Bobby), and Tammy Varnado (Chad). In addition to her daughters and sons-in-law. Effie is survived by grandchildren Christopher Inabinet, Brandon Smith (Whitaker), Hayden Varnado, Summer Huggins (Jacob), and Sydney Varnado. She was also GG Ma to Cash, Alexis, Palmer, and Magnolia May. Sister Irene Goff and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Marvin Laird (1979) and Alan Boldt (2000); parents Leonard and Nancy Goodwin. And sisters Winnie, Jettie, Betty, Ann, and Lujean.
As a mother, she put in endless extra hours and sacrificed her own comfort to ensure her girls had everything they needed. The deep bond they shared was forged in the fire of life’s challenges, and her fierce, unconditional love was their constant anchor. Because of her example, her daughters grew up knowing how to face the world with courage.
A private family service will be held on September 4, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Southland Memorial Gardens - Chapel of Hope 700 W Dunbar Rd, W. Columbia, SC 29170.
