

Sandy Run – Joanne Alston Geiger, 87, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, at Autumn Care Nursing Facility in Waynesville, N.C.
Born in Norfolk, Virginia, on August 12, 1927, the daughter of the late Claude and Corrine Bonnette Alston, she grew up in Littleton, N.C. She moved to Columbia, SC, with her family in 1945 and attended Dreher High School and the University of South Carolina. She was valedictorian of her Baptist Hospital nursing class and later retired as a very respected and beloved nurse. After Joanne married, she made her home in Sandy Run, SC, and later in Waynesville, NC. Joanne was a wonderful, devoted mother. She is survived by four daughters of whom she was very proud: Kay (Glenn) James, Gloria (Robert) Mitchum, Judy (Bruce) Kossman, and Susan (Greg) DiBiase. Her six grandchildren are Alex (Macarena) Pappas, Joseph Pappas III, Leah Alston (Connor) O’Brien, Bobby Mitchum, Phillip Mitchum and the late Justin DiBiase. Her two great grandchildren are Zoe Beckett Pappas and Milo Hunter Pappas. She is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Claudia (H. B.) McGregor, of Clyde, NC.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2015, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel. Family visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service in Southland Memorial Gardens Cemetery, West Columbia. Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Rev. Joseph James, her former minister at Cayce United Methodist Church, will officiate. Soloist is Hubert Smoak.
The family wishes to extend sincere appreciation to the staff and patients at Autumn Care. Their acts of generosity, friendship, and compassion during residency made her truly feel at home, in comfort and surrounded with love. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Cayce United Methodist Church, 1600 Twelfth St., Cayce, SC 29033.
