J. C. served in the US Army during World War II. After his military service, he attended Emmanuel College. J. C. was a trusted young man while at the college. Often, the college president would enlist J. C. to use his car to run errands, pick up students and other important duties where a mature young man was needed. It was at Emmanuel that J. C. met Lois, his wife. Lois and J. C. were married on June 6, 1948, and spent the next 70 years together.
After they married, J. C. and Lois moved to Columbia. Lois respected J. C. and viewed him as a very wise man. Their love was beyond compare. They were inseparable. J. C. was involved in church work. He was Sunday School Superintendent for 25+ years, secretary/treasurer/deacon for 30 years, Elder at Three Fountains P. H. Church for 5 years, lifetime deacon at West Columbia P. H. Church. He was recognized as a church planter in the Pentecostal Holiness Church.
J. C.’s daughters have always viewed him as a man’s man. His sons-in-law all knew that he could outwork them any day of the week! He always was ready to help someone in need. His girls learned early about the importance of a weed-free yard. It did take the girls years to appreciate that important life lesson. But, they all now cannot see a weed without pulling it out by the root! Small engines, electronics, pecan harvesting, and car maintenance were his passion. He rarely encountered a mechanical problem that he could not overcome. His girls remarked that he could fix anything. About the only car that he did not fix was the one that he, Lois, her brother, Jimmy (his wife) rode out a tornado in Lexington. That car was toast but the Lord protected his family.
J. C. is survived by his 4 daughters, Karen (Allen) Wiggins, Rhonda (Jonathan) Bauer, June (Tim) Ballantine, Angie (Chuck) Troutman and they are blessed with 9 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
He is survived by 3 sisters, Elsie Dean from Johnsonville, Mary Lynn Poston, from Johnsonville, Joyce Dooley Keisler, from West Columbia and Larry (Jake) Atkinson from Spartanburg. He was predeceased by brothers, Bobby, Harry, Jack and Dick (Richard).
J. C. and Lois are together with Jesus today in heaven.
