John David Newell

John David Newell, 63, died September 20, 2026. Born December 29, 1962, John spent his life meeting each day with steady resolve, a straightforward honesty, and the kind of quiet courage that leaves a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege to know him. He was a man who worked hard, spoke plainly, and could still bring well-timed humor to the moments that needed it most.

John built his working life as a CNC machinist at APEX Tool Group in Lexington. After leaving APEX, he continued for many years as a traveling machinist, earning respect through reliability, skill, and the pride he took in doing things the right way.

He lived in Gaston, South Carolina. Away from work, John found genuine enjoyment in the teams he loved—especially the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves—following them with loyal enthusiasm and the familiar, good-natured spirit that friends and family came to expect.

John is survived by his wife, Kathaline Newell; his sons, Justin Newell and Anthony Newell; and his grandchildren, Conner Pumphrey, Jaxon Pumphrey, Damon Pumphrey, Maddisyn Newell, and Carleigh Parramore. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Jane Streets (Ashley); his brother, Paul Newell (Leisa); and several nieces and nephews.

He is also remembered with affection by his best friends, Kenny Preleau, PJ Jones, Tammy and Richie Anslow, Michael and Stephanie Blake, and Fred and Cindy Gowing, as well as by his German Shepherd, Bo.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Dianne Davies Newell, and his son, Phillip Pumphrey; Grandparents, James and Charlotte Newell and Gilman and Eloise Davies.

The family extends sincere gratitude to the Lexington Medical Center 10th floor nurses and staff, Jason, Wes and Eric, and to Amedisys Hospice in Columbia, for their care and support.

A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
