

WEST COLUMBIA - Margaret was born, raised, and married in Littleton N.C. She moved to Columbia in 1961 with her husband Bill and sons. Shortly thereafter she joined Suber Marshall Memorial UMC where she played organ, piano and sang in the choir and directed music. Margaret became a member of Virginia Wingard UMC in the late 70's where she also played piano, directed music and sang in the choir. Margaret's passions were music, especially the piano, and theatre. She was involved in countless musical productions in the Columbia and Lexington areas over a period of 4+decades. Margaret was born July 22, 1933 and passed away Friday, March 11, 2016. She was the daughter of the late Willie Grey Mitchell and Anne Mae Cullam Mitchell. She began her career for Keenan and Kittrell Company. She eventually became personal assistance to Walter Keenan of Collier Keenan and company but had to retire due to illness in 2003.
Margaret is survived by her sons, Billy Elks (Cindy), David Elks (Jamie), Mitch Elks (Marie) and James Elks (Cat); grandchildren, Ashley, Melissa, Derek, Ryan and brother, W.G. Mitchell.
Services for Mrs. Elks will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel with entombment to follow in Southland Memorial Garden and Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
