Robert Donald “Don” Barber

COLUMBIA – A memorial service for Robert Donald “Don” Barber, 74, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 18, 2012 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel with interment at 1:00 p.m. Friday in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the funeral home. Mr. Barber was born August 30, 1937 in Memphis, Shelby County, TN and passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2012. He was a son of the late Oscar Variman “Rock” Barber and Mary Ernestine Lyons Barber. Mr. Barber retired from the Department of Army, Civil Service, Federal Government, August, 1997 at Fort Jackson after 33 years. He retired from the US Army Reserve, 120th US ARCOM, Ft. Jackson, SC, August, 1996, CW04 with 43 years of service. Mr. Barber was a very active member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. He was a member of Mason, Lodge No. 391 in Hope Mills, NC, Shrine, Sudan Shrine Temple, Newborn, NC and Royal Order Jesters, Sudan Temple, Newbern, NC. Mr. Barber is survived by his children, Robert Ryan Barber and Daryl Scott Barber both of Columbia, SC, Stephanie Leigh Barber Sanders and Susan Kimberly Barber Ryder both of Georgia, Donna Diane Barber Jones of Florida and Robert “Robbie” Wayne Barber Jones of Texas; 16 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brothers, James Ronald “Jimmy” Barber of Dallas, TX, Jerry Wayne Barber of Memphis, TN, William “Billy” Variman Barber of Cold Water, MS and many close friends. He was predeceased by his parents; daughter, Linda Jenice Barber Boone and two grandchildren.
