William E. Boney III

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of William E. Boney III. A beacon of love and unwavering kindness and generosity, who left us on February 18, 2025. He was 85 years old and born on November 30, 1939.

Billy was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in chemistry. After his tenure with the Air Force, he worked as a scientist at Abbott.

He retired from his work in 1980 and relocated to Mt. Pleasant, SC to begin his retirement. There he enjoyed the best seafood in the world with his family and friends. He lived on a golf course and enjoyed golfing and fishing on his boat. He was also a Gamecock fan.

Billy is survived by his sister, Dixie Boney Shumpert and Luther Shumpert, her husband; his nieces, Amanda Shumpert and her son, Noah Shumpert; Sarah Barrs and Clayton Barrs, her husband, and their children, Cooper and Sophia Barrs; along with his sister-in-law, Betsy Boney and her son, Sean.

Billy was preceded in death by his two brothers, Jesse Locke Boney and James Frederick Boney; his parents, Beverly and William E. Boney II; and his nephew, Adam Shumpert.

Billy will be deeply mourned and missed by all who knew and loved him. Also, a special thank you to Tom, his friend who saw him and us through his last days.

A visitation for William will be held Monday, February 24, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home - West Columbia Chapel, 820 West Dunbar Road, West Columbia, SC 29170. Following the visitation will be a funeral service at 3:00 PM at Southland Memorial Gardens - Chapel of Hope, 700 West Dunbar Road, West Columbia, SC 29170.
