William Michael Kemick, age 64, of Irmo, SC passed away at home on Thursday, October 12th, 2023. Bill was the first child of the late William Andrew Kemick and Lois Rita (Ambrose) Kemick. He was born in Syracuse, NY the day after Thanksgiving on November 28, 1958. Early on, he had shown a proclivity for mathematics. As a young boy of 6, he would keep notebooks of numbers, deriving pleasure simply by writing down the largest number series he could think of. He also irritated many elderly female relatives by asking their age.
He first went to Furman University where he obtained his BS in Math and then finished his graduate work at the University of South Carolina with a Masters in Mathematics and Masters in Statistics. He was employed in the Department of Vital Statistics at DHEC and later at USC.
It was at DHEC that Bill met his wife, Kathleen. They enjoyed 22 years together and she truly was his soul mate. It is rare to find such a perfect match as those two found in each other. They wed in Irmo, SC and enjoyed trips to the zoo, museum, the coast, and the mountains.
Bill had a strong love and respect for his pack of rescue dogs that he cared for over his lifetime. His pets were treated with kindness and empathy. Bill was also a loyal and thoughtful friend. He was a knowledgeable and patient teacher. Family and friends were treated gently. He was our family’s historian, the one person who remembered all the legend and lore of our family. He was a true bibliophile, and as such, was a wealth of information. He could carry on a conversation with anyone on just about anything. He was never without a book or two on him at all times. Bill will also be remembered for his whimsical and dry sense of humor and his love of all things “spicy”, specifically the Carolina Reaper.
Bill is survived by his sister, Mary Lynn S. Kemick (Curtis Amick); daughter, K. Danielle Campbell; niece, Elizabeth Thomas (Justin, Nova); nephew, David Amick; aunts, Elaine Litzelman and Jean Corvino; cousins, Suzanne Jordan, Bernie Litzelman, Jeanie Corvino, Richard Corvino and Teddy Corvino.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, William A. and Lois R. Kemick and wife, Kathleen Kemick.
A memorial service will be held for Bill at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 21st, 2023 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel, 820 West Dunbar Road, West Columbia, SC 29170, with a visitation to follow the service.
