Dave Borders, 83, of Waco, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2013 with his children at his side. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, June 28, 2013 at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church in Waco, TX with Dr. H. Leroy Fenton officiating. A private family interment will be held. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, June 27th at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors.
Mr. Borders was born on November 24, 1929 in Waxahachie, TX to Roy and Annie McAlister Borders. He graduated from Waxahachie HS in 1946 and from Baylor University in 1950 with a B.A. in Business Administration. He lettered in badminton and was the treasurer for Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity. Mr. Borders went to work for W.L. Perdue-Public Accountants in 1950, became a Certified Public Accountant in 1953, and a partner at W.L. Perdue in 1954. He was next employed by the Annuity Board of the Southern Baptist Convention--now Guidestone Financial--from 1957 until his retirement in 1990. He held the positions of Supervisor-Accounting Department, Supervisor-Variable Annuity Plan (Retirement Plan), Assistant Secretary of the Corp., Secretary of the Corp. and Vice President-Investments. In 1992 he started Dave Borders Investment Advisers.
Mr. Borders was a passionate Christian and an active member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church where he served as Deacon Chairman; Church Clerk; Sunday School teacher, Director, and Department Director; Church Training Director and Church Finance Committee. He served as treasurer for Ike Baptist Church, Ferris Ave. Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Waxahachie and the Ellis Baptist Association. Mr. Borders was dedicated to public service. He served as a board member and secretary of Waxahachie Rotary Club. He was a member of the Waxahachie Senior Citizens Center, Waxahachie Foundation, and Waxahachie YMCA where he served as Vice Chairman and then Chairman, each for two years. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Mayborn Museum. He was President of the Waxahachie Ex-Student Association for its golden anniversary in 1996. He served on the Baylor Bear Foundation for two terms. Mr. Borders was a member of several professional societies including the American Institute of Certified Accountants, Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants, Association for Investment Management & Research and Dallas Association of Investment Analysts.
He married Peggy Dobbins on March 29, 2003 in Waco. Mr. Borders was preceded in death by his parents, brother Marvin Borders, sister Dorothy Crawford, sisters-in-law Ouida Borders and Frances Borders, brother-in-law Ross Crawford, Jr., grandson Jack Borders and his first wife, Helen Borders.
Survivors include his wife Peggy Borders of Waco; son Damon Borders and his wife Kate of Dallas; daughters Debbie Wilson and her husband Sonny of Waxahachie; and Heather Borders Kerr and her husband Read of Dallas; step daughter Debra Burleson and her husband, John of Waco; brother Roy Borders, Jr.; grandchildren Danielle Chelette, Drew Wilson, Chase Wilson and his wife Lauren, Kyle Wilson and his wife Adrian, Delaney Borders, Caroline Borders, Elise Borders and Josie Borders; step grandchildren Jim Burleson, Scott Burleson and Meg Burleson; and great grandchildren Kash and Kade Wilson.
