Elizabeth "Betty" Jean Hicks died peacefully in the care of Providence Hospice March 1st in Waco, Texas at the age of ninety one. Betty was born July 30,1925 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to Elizabeth "Bessie" and Paul Smith. She attended Quincy High School and later received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The Massachusetts School of Art. She dreamed of the Fashion Industry in New York City but ultimately chose love over that career. Betty moved to Waco in 1962 and earned her teaching certification from Baylor University. She first taught Art at University Junior High and later learned about opportunities in fashion illustration. Using her combined passions, Betty began a career in fashion illustration for The Waco Tribune Herald and several local department stores including Career Girl, Cox's, Sachs, Mr. Jacks, and Lanes Town & Country.
Betty married Doyle Quintin Hicks December 22, 1965. Together they enjoyed playing piano and organ, dancing, golfing, traveling, and had special joys through their shared love of Bridge Clubs. Betty and Doyle were also blessed to enjoy memorable times with their grand children and great grandchildren. They were active members of First Presbyterian Church, where Betty served in many roles.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Paul Smith and step daughter, Janet Hicks. She is survived by her daughter Lesley Bruce of Hewitt (Tom Hamilton), step daughter Carol Jean Terry (Bill) of Bonham, step son Jeff Hicks (Penny) of Mission and daughter-in-law Barbara Fewell. Grandchildren Kelli Rogers (Andy), Andy Bruce, Daniel Terry, Aaron Terry (Esther), Anna May (Jason), James Watson (Amber), Austin Adams, Wendy Watts (Jonathan), Amy Gray (Tam) and 16 great grand children.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church with a special service to follow at Providence Park on March 14. Betty requested memorial donations be made to the charity of one's choice. The family extends sincere gratitude to the staff and Betty's many friends at her second home at Providence Park. Her shining blue eyes and dimpled smile will always remain in our hearts, and we rejoice that she is enjoying eternal life in her Heavenly home.
