Kenneth was born on October 8, 1942, in Waco, Texas, to Gladys Marie Brock and Nolan Henry Mays. He worked as a masonry contractor and proudly ran his own business, Mays Masonry, for more than 50 years. Known for his strong work ethic and leadership, Kenneth always led by example, both on the job and in life.
Above all, Kenneth valued his role as a husband, father, and grandfather. He was a devoted partner, a constant and caring presence to his children, and a bold, adventure-seeking Pa to his grandkids. Whether he was teaching life lessons, cheering them on, or heading out for a fishing trip or a drive down a country road, he created deep and lasting connections with those he loved most.
He found great joy in spending time with family and friends. He loved traveling, hunting across Texas, Colorado, and New Mexico, fishing along the Texas coast, and exploring new places. One of his favorite traditions was hosting an annual dove hunt each September at his home. In his free time, Kenneth could often be found outdoors, driving to Terlingua, TX, or cruising local spots like Mother Neff State Park and Lake Waco. Kenneth loved the simple things in life like fresh air, good company, and cruising down an open road.
Kenneth’s presence stayed with everyone he met. He was the kind of friend who showed up when it counted, the kind of father you could always rely on, and the kind of grandfather who brought joy and adventure to every moment.
Admired, respected, and deeply loved, his absence will be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Kenneth is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Tonna Lynn Mays, his son Kenneth “Wayne” Mays Jr. and wife Carmen, and his daughter Kendy Whicker and husband Mike. He was a proud grandfather to Cody Whicker, Casey Whicker, Mason Mays, and Trace Mays, and a beloved great-grandfather to Zoey, Witten, Coleman, and Maliha. He is also survived by his nephew, Joey Wayne Bass.
