Nicholas Lee Pelkola, 73, died June 3, 2026. Born January 3, 1953, in Wakefield, Michigan, he was the son of Ruben and Juanita (Bunker) Pelkola. He grew up in Trout Creek, Michigan, and after graduating, he moved to Alaska for an adventure. Nicholas was a resident of Waco, Texas.
Those who knew Nick remember a steady presence—patient in spirit, loyal in love, and quietly inspirational in the way he showed up for others. His faith guided his days, and his sense of adventure carried him beyond what was familiar, shaping a life marked by sincerity and purpose. His favorite quote, “Be Real Always,” reflected the straightforward integrity with which he lived.
In June of 1995, he met Ruth Shedd, and they have been united for 31 years. Together, they raised three daughters: Jamecka McClean, Chionta Shedd (Marilyn), and Rachel Shedd. He was also a proud grandfather to four granddaughters—Ireka, Asia, Evelyn, and Angel—and two great-grandsons, Keymar and Zemir.
Nick is also survived by his son, Joshua L. Pelkola (Brandy), and two grandchildren, Quinn and Peyton; and his daughter, Shelly M. Kennington (Joshua), and two grandchildren, Caleb and Ella. He is further survived by his siblings: Gail Lannet (John), Ruben Pelkola Jr. (Monica), Brenda Jones (Shannon), Donella Pelkola, and Ona Pelkola, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Rodney Pelkola.
Nicholas treasured time with family and friends, taking long walks with his dog, Panther, and sharing stories—often over a game of chess. He never met a stranger, and his warmth and attentiveness made others feel welcomed and seen. Over the years, Nick was often found alongside his wife, Ruth, consistently finding opportunities to serve and celebrate the community around them.
The family extends many thanks for the attention and care provided by the professional medical care team at Providence, and for the support from family and friends.
