Raymond C. Younger, 94, of Waco, passed away in Waco. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with Military Honors provided by Dyess Air Force Honor Guard along with Masonic graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Monday, December 10th at the funeral home.
Mr. Younger was born in Port Arthur, Texas to Robert and Viola (Sawyer) Younger and grew up in Walnut Springs during the Great Depression. After he graduated from Walnut Springs High School he attended Clifton Lutheran College before enrolling in the military. He attended advanced flying school at Blackland Army Airfield, now the site of Waco Regional Airport; he earned his wings and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant on April 15, 1943. Then it was back to school, this time for B-26 training in Del Rio, he flew with the 9th Air Force, 598th Bombardment Squadron. Today his old outfit is known as the 598th Range Squadron. Mr. Younger was on a crew that flew missions over Germany, bombing railroads, factories, roads and other strategic targets. He flew 26 missions before the war ended. All of his missions were flown over Germany. He was never injured, even though he was shot at countless times. Mr. Younger made a career of the military, spending 22 years in various capacities, including 5 years in Japan. He eventually transferred to flying KC-97 Stratofreighter refueling planes. Mr. Younger retired from the military in 1963 as a Major. After leaving the military he returned to Waco and worked for Central Freight Lines for 21 years.
Mr. Younger was a member of Bellmead Masonic Lodge #1329 AF & AM and was a Wagon Master with the Mobile Scout Club. He loved to play golf and was a avid Baylor football fan. Mr. Younger was preceded in death by his first wife; Frances Pauline Jones Younger, second wife; Janice Morgan Jones Younger and daughters; Cynthia Cloud Younger and Jacqueline Lynn Snow and sister; Jeanette Younger Wolf.
Survivors include his grandson; Sean Snow, son-in-law; Hawk Snow, brother-in-law; Jay Jones, Sr. and several nieces and nephews.
