Robert Harris Stewart, much loved and devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed on peacefully on May 21, 2014 at the age of 86. He was born at his Grandma Jenny’s home in Ft. Worth, Texas, but lived most of his life in Waco. He attended Brook Ave. Elementary, West Jr. High School, and Waco High where he lettered in basketball, sang in the Glee Club and performed in the Senior Play. After high school, he attended both Texas Tech University and the University of Texas before going to work for Western Electric in Waco. During his career in telecommunications he also worked for Southwestern Bell and AT&T from which he retired after 38 years of honorable service in 1987. After retirement, he enjoyed travelling the United States including Alaska. He also traveled internationally to Canada, the major capitals of Europe, Britain, Ireland, Scotland, the Holy Land, Egypt and Greece. “Bob” took up the game of golf just before he retired and enjoyed many years playing with his fellow senior players at Cottonwood Creek. He was an avid sports fan and especially of the Texas Rangers baseball team. He loved bird-watching and was member of the Audubon Society. A Master Mason, he was a 50+ year member of the J. H. Gurley chapter of the Grand Lodge of Texas. As a child, he attended Calvary Baptist Church with his parents. As a young adult, he joined the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Waco where he was a member for over 60 years and served his church faithfully as First Reader, on the Board of Trustees, teaching in the Sunday School, as Reading Room librarian and many other positions.
Robert was predeceased by his parents, his wives Bobbie Lee Shaw and Nancy Thompson and his son, Raymond Dale Stewart. He is survived by three children, his eldest daughter Linda and her husband Buddy Ozanne from Dallas, his son Ronald Stewart from Waco, and his youngest daughter Robin and her husband Steve Kelly from Lewisville, his adopted son Winston Stewart and step-son John Hugh Duckworth from California. He is much loved by his eight grandchildren, Sloan and Tyler Ozanne, Jakob Stewart, Jenni Pittman, Angela Stewart, Nicole Samford, Alison Robinson and Stewart Kelly and his great-grandsons Caden, Dillon and Lane.
A graveside service will be held Friday, May 30th at 12:00 noon at Waco Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. The family will receive visitors at Connally-Compton Funeral Directors from 9:30am-10:45am Friday before the service.
