He retired from the department as an Assistant Chief.
Following retirement, Abel embraced a new chapter at the Maui Marriott Resort, where he worked in security and later as Night Manager. He was honored as Manager of the Year for his dedication and leadership.
Abel was deeply committed to his community and was actively involved in numerous organizations, including Saint Joseph’s Holy Name Society, Kiwanis Club of Maui, the Korean War Veterans Association Maui No Ka Oi Chapter, and the Maui ʻOhana Makule softball team.
An avid swimmer, Abel participated in several biathlons, the Lanaʻi Channel Swim, multiple Waikiki Rough Water swims, and the Hawaiian Long Distance Invitational Rough Water Swim.
