Bertha Lucille Akuna

On March 30, 1934, Augustine Fernandez and Adeline "Alice" Frank welcomed Bertha into the world at Puunene Hospital.

Bertha attended Puunene School, lao Intermediate and graduated from Baldwin High School in Wailuku.

On March 3, 1962, she married the love of her life, Edward K. Akuna at St. Anthony Church in Wailuku. She was a devoted wife and loving and caring mother to her son Derek. They resided on Oahu until moving into their forever home in ihei, Maui. She opened her home to her nieces and nephews and provided them with a lifetime of memories.

She was employed at the Maui Land and Pine during summers in high school. Upon graduation she worked as a Nanny and Chore-Aid for several distinguished families on Maui. She then went on to serve many more families as a in-home childcare provider. She had a love for children and lovingly cared for them as her own. Well into their adulthood they remained in contact with her.

She is survived by her son Derek (Paula) Akuna, of Kihei, a sister, Harriet O'shea, of Makawao and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved fur babies. A special thank you to Mandi Schamel, Hospice Maui, and MMMC-ICU Unit.

Bertha is predeceased by her loving husband Edward K. Akuna; parents, Augustine Fernandez and Adeline "Alice" Frank, Step-Father, Henry Frank, Brothers, Gilbert, Richard and Wallace "Wally" Fernandez, and Sisters; Pricilla "Pearl" Mederios and Annabel Evans

Service will be held on Wednesday December 6, 2023 at Norman's Mortuary. Family visitation begins at 8:00a.m.; public visitation 9:00a.m.; Service at 11:00a.m.; Luncheon to follow. Burial at 1:00p.m. at The Veteran's Cemetery.
