June 3, 1933 - November 9, 2025
In the early morning hours of November 9, 2025 at his childhood residence in Kula, Dwight Joan Sr (92) was peacefully called home to our Lord’s Heavenly Kingdom. He was surrounded by family.
Dwight was born on June 3, 1933 to Faustino and Isabel Joan. He attended Kealahou School in Kula, Maui High School in Hamakuapoko and graduated from Maui Vocational School where he learned the trade of mechanics. Dwight was a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps where he was stationed at Fort Pendleton, CA and Camp Fuji in Japan. He also served his country in the Korean War.
In his lifetime, he wore many hats. At a young age he labored as a farmhand. Farming later became one of his greatest passions in life. In his adulthood, he was a heavy equipment mechanic and truck driver for several construction companies on Maui. He later ventured out on his own and opened up Dwight’s Repair and Gas Station in Kula. Before retiring from the workforce, he worked as an electrician at Mauka Electric and High Power Electric. He also drove the ambulance for high school football games, rodeos and for the first aid tent at the Maui County Fair. Throughout these years he continued his love of farming.
Dwight enjoyed being surrounded by family - whether it be visits, gatherings or daily phone calls. Family meant the world to him. He was a devout catholic who attended weekly mass until his decline in health. He was active in volunteering his time and skills to his parrish at the Holy Ghost Church. He took pride in pitching in wherever he could especially when preparing for the annual Holy Ghost Feast. He would help setting up the electrical, lau lau making, collecting lunch tickets and even assisted in running the hall between lunch shifts. He was also the bread delivery guy on bread making days. The Holy Ghost parrish acknowledged his commitment to the church and awarded him for his service.
During his down time, he enjoyed working on jigsaw and word search puzzles. He was also an avid reader. He loved reading the Reader’s Digest, newspapers, farm magazines and books. His favorite author was Lee Childs. He also spent a lot of his time with his very loved furbaby companion, his cat Emmy Boy, who he taught many tricks and commands to.
Dwight is survived by his wife, Milagros “Mila” Joan, his four children, Stephanie (Larry) Pascual, Dwight (JoAnn) Joan Jr, Roxane Joan (Ernest) Agcaoili and Donna Joan. He has 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents, Faustino and Isabel Joan and his sister Elizabeth Feiteira.
Dwight’s presence will be missed by his family and all that knew him. His light and memory will forever remain in our hearts and will be eternally cherished. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Anne Yoshizawa and the medical staff at Kaiser Permanente, the doctors, nurses and staff at Maui Memorial Medical Center and Hospice Maui for their compassionate care.
Funeral services will be held on December 2, 2025 at the Holy Ghost Church in Kula. Family visitation will be held at 8:30am, public viewing will be held from
9am - 11am, with mass to follow. A burial ceremony will be held at 1pm at the Makawao Veteran’s Cemetery, on Baldwin Avenue in Makawao.
