Evelyn P. Sardinha, 91, of Kahului, Maui passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, July 20th. Evelyn was born in Pu’unene, Maui to Nettie Fernandez and August Rapoza Pimentel.
She attended Pu’unene School (where the relationship with the love of her life, John T. Sardinha began), she went on to Baldwin High School and graduated with Honors. She then attended and graduated from Maui Technical School (now UHMC), again with Honors.
After graduating, but before starting her career, she went on the adventure of her life. She followed her Major League Professional Baseball Player Fiance to New York . Johnny had just signed with the New York Giants. Later, this simple couple from the plantation town of Pu’unene, went abroad as Johnny was chosen to join the Nankai Hawks Professional Baseball Team in Osaka, Japan. He was the first American baseball player to ever play ball for Japan. After living in Japan for almost 5 years, she moved back home to Maui to start her family and Professional Career.
Her career as a private secretary began in the Hawaii Legislature under former Maui Mayor Elmer F. Carvalho, while he was Speaker of the House on Oahu. She was then a private secretary for the Head of the Nursing Department at Maui Memorial Hospital. Her career then led her to the Maui Police Department with the Records Division. While at MPD, she was hand picked by Mayor Carvalho to his office and was assigned to the County Managing Director, Howard Nakamura. She concluded her career under former Mayor and good friend Charmane Tavares. After over 30 years of Public Service, she retired to spend her Golden Years with her loving husband.
She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially her children and grandchildren. She traveled extensively to the outer Islands, Las Vegas (which she loved) and the Mainland in support of Johnny’s Senior Baseball career. As time went on, they found joy right here on Maui spending time at many Maui stores, especially Queen Ka’ahumanu Center where they were considered iconic. She was an excellent designer and seamstress who sewed all her clothes and was known everywhere she went for her bell bottoms and her unique fashion style.
After the death of the love of her life (6 ½ years ago), Evelyn filled her life doing things for and with her loving children and grandchildren. These children and grandchildren include: daughters, Lisa Tintiangco (Chris) & Tanya Moleta (Donovyne); her son, John T. (Alicia - Deceased) Sardinha II (Deceased on August 22, 2024); grandchildren, Dr. Chace Moleta, M.D. (Christian), Chazz Moleta (Jasmyne), Chastiny “Nikki” Greig (Nalu), Dr. Kristi Tintiangco, Pharm.D. (Ikaika), John Thomas “JT” Sardinha III (Lacey), Tasha Mahelona (Elden “Pua”), Dante Sardinha, & Bobby Lu; great grandchildren, Cruz, Hunter, Blaise, Ryze, Zen, Rheannon, Stassi and Beauden; loved as grandchildren, Nalu, Chiqua, Mister sister, Harriet Pimentel of Kahului; deceased brothers, Clifford (Clarita), Vernon (Chris) & Frederick (Yolanda - Deceased) Pimentel.
Our heartfelt appreciation to her amazing & loving dentist Dr. Trace Baxter, the caring & concerned Kaiser Doctors, the awesome nurses and staff of Maui Memorial Hospital’s South wing (4th floor), Hospice Maui (especially Sabrina and Savannah…We couldn’t have done it without them), and finally, the supportive and always ready-to-help Sherry Sardinha (niece).
