Frederick Medeiros Calhau, Jr. (Spyda), 78, of Kahului, Maui, passed away peacefully at home on August 14, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on December 1, 1946, in Wailuku, Maui, to predeceased parents: Frederick Medeiros Calhau, Sr. (Father) and Edna Kahoʻokele Calhau (Mother). Frederick was a man of quiet strength, deep compassion, and unwavering humility.
Frederick lived a life of service and grace. As a retired police officer of 25 years with the Maui Police Department, he protected his community with integrity and empathy, never seeking recognition. Off duty, his soul found rhythm as a drummer and entertainer; he brought joy to gatherings and a sense of connection that lingered long after the last note. He was also a skilled bowler, known not just for his precision, but for the friendships he nurtured.
Frederick’s greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend – always present, always listening, always loving. He taught us that strength is gentle, that kindness is powerful, and that love is best expressed in everyday moments.
Frederick is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Ipo Calhau, children: Tami Calhau (Jeffrey Gomes), Frederick Medeiros (Julie) Calhau, III, Samantha (David) Dizon, Joel (Heather) Calhau, and Efren (Jazz) Apa. Grandchildren: Kyra (Matt) Cober, (Pre-deceased) Kahu Dizon, Kaʻike Dizon (Cindy Castillo), Frederick Medeiros Calhau, IV, Kuluwai Dizon, Nicholas Calhau, and Reeve Apa.
